A short film is not a smaller feature

The runtime is not the form. On the specific grammar of the short, and why we stop at eighteen minutes.

The most common note we get is: 'This could be a feature.' It is meant as a compliment. It rarely lands that way.

A short is not the first act of something longer. It is a complete thought, built around compression rather than accumulation. Every scene has to carry its weight.

“A feature earns its ending. A short has to arrive already knowing it.”

We stop at eighteen minutes because that is where our films become honest. Past that, we are usually explaining. Cut the explanation. The room will understand.
