Every film we have made has been shaped by what we could not afford. The one-room chawl in A Small Sun is one room because we could not afford two — and the film is better for it.
The constraint is a collaborator. It tells you which scenes are essential and which were only ever comfortable.
“A budget is not a limit on the story. It is a description of the story you have chosen to tell.”
Our rules: spend on what the audience will feel, pay people properly, and protect the one scene you are making the film for.
